Tipping and splitting the bill

A short guide to the simple maths behind a tip — the formula, typical percentages, and how to split a bill fairly between a group.

What this tool does

The Tip Calculator takes a bill amount, a tip percentage, and a number of people, then shows the tip, the grand total, and the amount each person owes — updating as you type. It all runs in your browser.

The formula

The tip is just bill × (percentage ÷ 100), and the total is bill + tip. To split, divide the total by the number of people. For example, a 20% tip on a $50 bill is $10, for a $60 total; split three ways that's $20 each.

How to use it

  1. Open the Tip Calculator.
  2. Type the bill amount.
  3. Tap a preset percentage (10–25%) or enter a custom one.
  4. Use the − and + buttons to set how many people are splitting.
  5. Read the tip, total, and per-person amount.

How much should you tip?

In the United States, 15–20% is customary for table service, with 18–20% common for good service; counter service and other situations differ. Tipping norms vary widely by country, so treat presets as a starting point and adjust to local custom.

Splitting fairly

Dividing the total evenly is the quickest approach. Because cents don't always divide cleanly, the per-person figure is rounded — one person may end up a cent different so the parts add back to the exact total.
