How much to tip
Tipping customs vary by country and setting, but in the US a common guide for table service is around 15% for adequate service, 18–20% for good service, and more for exceptional service. The maths is simple: the tip is the percentage of the bill, and the total is the bill plus the tip. The calculator does it instantly so you avoid mental arithmetic at the table.
Splitting a bill fairly
- For an even split, divide the total (bill plus tip) by the number of people.
- Decide whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount; both are common.
- If everyone ordered very differently, splitting each person's items and tipping proportionally is fairer than an even split.
