Why Mother's Day is on the second Sunday of May
The American Mother's Day is younger than it feels: Anna Jarvis held the first service in 1908 in Grafton, West Virginia, to honour her own mother, and campaigned until President Wilson made the second Sunday of May official in 1914. Jarvis spent the rest of her life fighting the florists' and card industry's commercialisation of her holiday — a battle she lost so completely that Mother's Day is now the biggest flower-selling occasion of the year in the United States.
Planning ahead
Mother's Day is the busiest day of the year for many restaurants — brunch tables in popular spots book out one to two weeks ahead, and many venues switch to fixed menus. Florists' delivery slots for the Sunday fill by mid-week, and arrangements ordered at the last minute cost noticeably more. If the counter above shows less than a week and a gift still needs shipping, expedited delivery is already the only option.

Is Mother’s Day the same date in every country?
No. The UK’s Mothering Sunday follows the church calendar (three weeks before Easter), much of the Arab world uses March 21, and France celebrates in late May or early June. The second-Sunday-of-May date counted here is used by the US, Canada, Australia and about 90 other countries.
Why did Anna Jarvis turn against her own holiday?
She intended a personal day of gratitude — her signature suggestion was a handwritten letter to your mother — and saw printed cards and cut flowers as profiteering that outsourced the sentiment. She organised boycotts and was even arrested protesting a carnation sale.
