Upcoming Father's Day dates

Why Father's Day is on the third Sunday of June

Father's Day took half a century longer than Mother's Day to become official. Sonora Smart Dodd — raised, with her five siblings, by a Civil War veteran single father — organised the first celebration in Spokane, Washington in 1910, but Congress resisted for decades (one senator worried it would become a commercial gimmick, which was not entirely wrong). Nixon finally signed the third Sunday of June into law in 1972.

Planning ahead

Father's Day planning is lighter than its May counterpart, but the same rules apply in miniature: popular steakhouses and barbecue spots fill their Sunday tables about a week out, and shipped gifts need ordering by the Monday before to arrive on standard rates. It also lands within days of the northern summer solstice — reliably long evenings, which is why grills feature so heavily.
