Why Black Friday is on the day after Thanksgiving
Black Friday is the day after American Thanksgiving, so it moves with it — always the fourth Friday of November, somewhere between the 23rd and the 29th. The name comes from 1950s Philadelphia, where police used it for the traffic chaos of the day after Thanksgiving; retailers later reframed it as the day their books moved from red ink into black. It stopped being a single day some time ago: most large retailers now run a week or more of "Black Friday" pricing, with Cyber Monday closing the run.
Planning ahead
Prices are not uniformly best on the day. Electronics and appliances genuinely bottom out over the weekend, but many advertised discounts are measured against a list price nobody paid, so a price-history check is worth more than the percentage on the sticker. If you are shipping gifts, note that the Black Friday window is also when carriers begin to slow: an order placed on the day arrives well before Christmas, one placed three weeks later may not.
