Why Easter is on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25
Easter is the calendar's great moving target: the Council of Nicaea fixed it in 325 AD as the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox. The church calculation — the computus, using a fixed March 21 equinox and an idealized "ecclesiastical" moon rather than the astronomical one — was for centuries the most important math problem in Europe, and it can land Easter anywhere from March 22 to April 25. This counter uses that same Gregorian computus, so it always agrees with the Western church date.
Planning ahead
Because Easter drags a convoy of dates with it — Good Friday two days before, school spring breaks, Mardi Gras 47 days earlier — an early-March Easter and a late-April one produce very different springs. Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays in much of the world, making this one of the year's biggest travel weekends; flight and accommodation prices climb steeply in the final month. Hosting? Order any special roast a week or two ahead, and note that supermarkets in many countries close entirely on Easter Sunday.

FAQ
When is Easter?
Easter falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25 each year.
How many days until Easter?
This page shows the exact number of days remaining until the next Easter, and it updates automatically each day.
Why does Easter move when Christmas does not?
Easter is tied to the lunar calendar (the full moon after the spring equinox) because the Crucifixion happened at Passover, which follows the Hebrew lunisolar calendar. Christmas is fixed to a solar-calendar date, so it never moves.
Why do Orthodox churches celebrate Easter on a different day?
Orthodox churches run the same rule on the older Julian calendar, whose equinox has drifted 13 days from the Gregorian one. Some years the dates coincide; in others they are up to five weeks apart.
