Upcoming Juneteenth dates

Why Juneteenth is on June 19

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865 — the day Union general Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced that all enslaved people were free, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had legally freed them. Celebrated in Black communities, especially in Texas, every year since 1866, it became the newest US federal holiday in June 2021 — the first added since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.

Planning ahead

As a fixed-date federal holiday, Juneteenth behaves like July 4: when the 19th lands on a Saturday the federal day off is Friday the 18th, and on a Sunday it moves to Monday the 20th. Community events — festivals, cookouts, readings of General Order No. 3, red-food traditions — are typically scheduled across the nearest weekend, so check local dates rather than assuming the 19th itself.

Why did emancipation take until 1865 to reach Texas?

The Emancipation Proclamation of January 1863 could only be enforced where the Union army was present, and Texas — the Confederacy’s most remote state — saw almost no Union troops until the war ended. Granger’s arrival in Galveston brought both the news and the force to make it real.

What does the name Juneteenth mean?

It is a portmanteau of “June nineteenth”, in use since the earliest celebrations in the 1860s. The holiday is also called Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, and Jubilee Day.
