What Does Lorem Ipsum Actually Mean? History and Proper Use

Lorem ipsum looks like nonsense Latin because it is — deliberately. It began as a scrambled passage of Cicero, became a printer’s specimen standard in the 1500s, and survived into every design tool made since. Here is where it comes from, what the original text actually says, and the cases where using it is a mistake.

Where lorem ipsum comes from

The text is mangled from De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), written by Cicero in 45 BC. The famous opening fragment — lorem ipsum dolor sit amet — is chopped out of Cicero's phrase dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet: "pain itself, because it is pain". Latin scholar Richard McClintock traced the source in the 1980s by hunting down consectetur, one of the rarer words in the passage.

Printers began using scrambled versions of the passage as specimen filler in the 1500s. The modern ubiquity came in two waves: Letraset's dry-transfer sheets standardised the text across design studios in the 1960s, and Aldus PageMaker shipped it as the built-in placeholder in the 1980s — from there it spread into effectively every layout tool, CMS and template since.

Why designers fill layouts with nonsense on purpose

The whole point is that lorem ipsum is readable-shaped but not readable. It has roughly the letter-frequency and word-length distribution of European languages, so a page filled with it looks typographically realistic — but because it means nothing, reviewers judge the layout, hierarchy and type instead of copy-editing the words. Real sentences derail design reviews; "asdf asdf asdf" distorts them in the other direction, because uniform repetition doesn't ripple and wrap the way language does.

That's also why it beats "type anything": placeholder text needs varied word lengths, sentence rhythms and paragraph sizes to expose how a design handles them, which is exactly what a generator produces on demand.

When lorem ipsum is the wrong tool

Three cases where real text wins:

  • Late-stage design. Content and design shape each other; a layout that only ever held lorem ipsum tends to break the day real headlines — longer, shorter, awkwardly wrapping — arrive. Swap in genuine draft copy as early as it exists.
  • Anything a stakeholder might ship. Placeholder text escaping into production is a classic incident — live sites and even printed material have shipped with lorem ipsum in the hero. If it must not ship, some teams use obviously-broken filler ("DRAFT DRAFT DRAFT") for exactly that reason.
  • Localisation and accessibility checks. Lorem ipsum can't reveal how German compound nouns overflow a button or how a screen reader paces real sentences. Test those with real language.

And a small technical note: spam filters and grammar checkers sometimes flag lorem ipsum precisely because it is famous filler — keep it out of test emails you care about delivering.

Getting placeholder text that fits

Generate to the shape you need: paragraphs for page mockups, sentences for cards and intros, words when a field has a hard limit (pair with the word & character counter to hit exact counts). Use the HTML option when pasting into a CMS so paragraph breaks survive as <p> tags rather than collapsing into one blob. The generator runs entirely in your browser — generate as much as you like, nothing is sent anywhere.
