What Is a HEIC File? (and How to Convert iPhone Photos to JPG)

You AirDrop a photo to your PC, or download your camera roll, and instead of familiar JPGs you get a folder of .heic files that half your software refuses to open. Nothing is broken. HEIC is simply the format iPhones have shot by default since 2017 — and it is genuinely better than JPEG in every way except one: the rest of the world hasn't fully caught up with it.

What is a HEIC file?

A HEIC file is a photo saved in the High Efficiency Image Container format, which stores images compressed with HEVC (H.265) video technology. It holds the same visual quality as a JPEG in roughly half the file size, and it is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads since iOS 11 in 2017.

Technically, HEIC is the container (a box that can hold one image, a burst, a Live Photo's key frame, depth maps and metadata) and HEIF is the broader standard it implements. In day-to-day use the terms are interchangeable: the photo your iPhone takes is a .heic file.

Why does Apple use HEIC instead of JPEG?

Storage. A 12- or 48-megapixel camera shooting JPEG fills a phone quickly, and JPEG is 1992 technology — its compression is primitive by modern standards. HEVC-based compression gets the same perceived quality into about half the bytes, which doubles the number of photos a phone (and an iCloud plan) can hold. HEIC also supports 10-bit colour, transparency and depth information, none of which JPEG can store.

The trade-off Apple accepted is compatibility: JPEG's single unbeatable feature is that every device and program built since the 1990s can open it. That is the entire reason HEIC still causes friction.

Why won't HEIC files open on Windows or Android?

Patent licensing, mostly. HEVC decoding is patent-encumbered, so support outside Apple's ecosystem arrived late and unevenly. Where things stand:

  • Windows: Windows 10/11 open HEIC in Photos once the (free) HEIF Image Extensions are installed from the Microsoft Store; some machines need the HEVC video extension too. Many third-party Windows programs still don't support it.
  • Android: modern versions view HEIC fine, but plenty of apps, upload forms and older devices still reject it.
  • The web: no mainstream browser displays HEIC natively — which is why upload forms so often refuse iPhone photos.

In practice: your photos are fine, but anything leaving the Apple ecosystem is smoother as a JPG.

How to convert HEIC to JPG

Three sensible routes, depending on where you are:

  • In your browser, without uploading: our image format converter decodes HEIC on your own device and re-encodes to JPG (or PNG/WebP), in batches. No account, no upload — the photos never leave your machine, which matters for a camera roll.
  • On a Mac: select the files in Preview → File → Export, and choose JPEG. The Photos app also exports JPGs by default.
  • On the iPhone itself: share the photo by email or upload it through most apps and iOS converts it to JPEG automatically on the way out. Copying the file directly (AirDrop to a Mac, cable to a PC) is what hands over the raw HEIC.

Avoid the "free HEIC converter" upload sites for anything personal — a photo library is exactly the wrong thing to send to an anonymous server, for the reasons covered in our look at online file tools.

How to make your iPhone shoot JPG instead

If HEIC keeps getting in your way, switch the camera to JPEG at the source: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. Photos taken from then on are JPGs. The cost is roughly double the storage per photo, which is why the setting Apple ships ("High Efficiency") is the better default for most people — convert on the way out only when something needs a JPG.

There is also a transfer-time option: Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic converts to a compatible format when you copy photos off the phone by cable, while leaving the space-efficient HEICs on the device.

Should you convert your whole library?

No — convert on demand. HEIC is the better storage format, and every HEIC→JPG conversion is a lossy re-encode: quality you cannot get back and roughly twice the disk space. Keep the originals as they are, and produce JPGs for the specific photos that need to travel — the conversion takes seconds when you actually need it.
