What is X% of a Number?

Find a percentage of a number — handy for tips, discounts and tax. Everything runs locally in your browser.

=
12

How it works

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number: (X ÷ 100) × Y. So 15% of 80 = 0.15 × 80 = 12. For all three percentage modes, use the full Percentage Calculator.

Where you'd use this

The everyday one: tax, tips, commission, deposits and “how much is X% off”. It is also the calculation people most often do twice because they are not sure they got it right the first time.

For example: A 20% deposit on a $640,000 house is $128,000. Two discounts do not add: 30% off then 20% off is not 50% off, it is 0.7 × 0.8 = 0.56, so 44% off — a $200 jacket costs $112, not $100.
